Firebase Cloud Messaging and native push

Firebase Cloud Messaging is the infrastructure MyGymDesk uses to deliver push notifications to Android phones; iOS push goes directly to Apple’s APNs. There is nothing for a gym to configure — payment receipts, class reminders, expiry alerts and campaign broadcasts reach members and staff automatically on every plan.

What you can do with it

Transactional alerts members actually see

Payment confirmations, renewal reminders and membership-expiry warnings are pushed to the member’s phone without the per-message cost of WhatsApp or SMS.

Class and booking reminders

Booking confirmations and pre-class reminders reach members on their phone, cutting no-shows without staff having to chase anyone.

Broadcast campaigns to a member segment

Owners send a push campaign to all members, or to a segment such as active, expiring-soon or expired, from the notifications module.

Owner and staff alerts on the business app

Owners receive alerts on their own phone — for example a blocked member trying to enter — routed to the business app rather than the member app.

One send reaches both platforms

A single MyGymDesk notification fans out to the right transport per device: Firebase Cloud Messaging for Android tokens, Apple’s APNs for iOS tokens.

How to set it up

  1. 1There is no Firebase setup for a gym to do, and no Firebase screen, key field or connect button in MyGymDesk — the messaging infrastructure is part of the platform.
  2. 2Ask the member or staff member to install MyGymDesk Member or MyGymDesk Business from Google Play or the App Store.
  3. 3On first launch, accept the notification permission prompt. The device registers a push token against that account automatically.
  4. 4Choose which events send notifications at Settings → Growth & Apps → Notifications, where each event lists its channels side by side.
  5. 5To send a one-off announcement rather than an automatic alert, use the push campaign screen and pick the member segment to target.
  6. 6If a member stops receiving notifications, have them check the notification permission in the phone’s OS settings and sign in again to re-register the device.

Frequently asked questions

Does MyGymDesk use Firebase for push notifications?

For Android, yes — MyGymDesk sends through Firebase Cloud Messaging’s v1 API. iOS notifications do not go through Firebase; they are sent directly to Apple’s push service (APNs).

Do I need my own Firebase project or API key?

No. Firebase is MyGymDesk’s own infrastructure. There is no Firebase configuration screen in the product and nothing for a gym to sign up for, pay for or paste in.

Which plans include push notifications?

All of them, including Starter. Native push is not a plan-gated feature — there is no push entitlement in the plan configuration at all.

Do push notifications cost per message like WhatsApp?

No. Unlike WhatsApp template messages, native push has no per-message charge, which makes it the cheaper channel for reminders and announcements.

Why did a member not get a notification?

The most common reasons are that the app was never installed, the notification permission was declined at first launch, or the member signed out. Push needs a registered device token, so reinstalling and signing in again usually restores it.
